UKRI: (UKRI) UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is a new body which works in partnership with universities, research organisations, businesses, charities, and government to create the best possible environment for research and innovation to flourish in the UK (https://www.ukri.org). UKRI (formerly known as Research Councils UK) is an independent organisation with the main focus on research and innovation which is mainly funded through the Science Budget by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
STFC: STFC (The Science and Technology Facilities Counci) (http://www.stfc.ac.uk), is one of UKRI’s nine publicly funded Research Councils responsible for supporting, co-ordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development. STFC hosts world class experimental (Diamond, ISIS, and CLF – the national synchrotron, neutron, and laser facilities) and computational facilities (Hartree Centre for high performance computing and data-intensive science capabilities) in the UK, and enables access to leading international science facilities (ESRF, ILL, CERN, among others), with more than 3,500 users each year, carrying out more than 2,000 experiments and generating around 900 publications. A world-leading multi-disciplinary science organisation, STFC supports an academic community of over 1,000 who work at more than 80 universities and research institutes in the UK, Europe, Japan and the United States, including a rolling cohort of more than 700 PhD students. STFC’s Scientific Computing Department (SCD), which will be primarily involved in the project, provides large-scale computing resources and expertise in scientific computing and information technology to the STFC science programme and its partners within UK and worldwide. The Department has about 170 staff and holds about 40 Petabytes of scientific data and runs several High Performance Computers.
